When to Replace Your Shocks and Struts

Parts Team · 10/20/2026

Shocks vs. struts

Both control how your suspension settles after a bump. A strut is a structural part of the suspension; a shock is not. Many cars use struts up front and shocks in the rear.

Signs they are worn

  • The ride feels bouncy or floaty over bumps
  • The nose dives when you brake, or squats when you accelerate
  • Cupped or uneven tire wear
  • Visible fluid leaking down the shock or strut body

Most last 50,000 to 100,000 miles.

Replace in pairs

Always replace left and right together so both sides respond evenly.
