5 Signs of a Failing Fuel Pump

Parts Team · 10/20/2026

What the fuel pump does

It moves fuel from the tank to the engine at the right pressure. When it weakens, the engine starves for fuel.

Five warning signs

  1. Sputtering at high speed or under load
  2. Hard starting or long cranking
  3. Loss of power going uphill or accelerating
  4. Whining noise from the fuel tank
  5. Stalling in hot weather

Replace the whole module

Many modern pumps come as a complete module with the sending unit and strainer. Replacing the assembly is more reliable than the pump alone.
