Car Battery Buying Guide: Group Size and CCA
Parts Team · 10/20/2026
The three numbers that matter
- Group size — the physical size and terminal layout. It must match your car exactly.
- Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) — starting power in the cold. Match or exceed your vehicle's spec, especially in cold climates.
- Reserve capacity — how long the battery runs accessories if the alternator quits.
Flooded, AGM, or EFB?
- Flooded — standard and affordable.
- AGM — handles heat, deep cycling, and start-stop systems; required on many newer cars.
- EFB — a middle ground for entry-level start-stop vehicles.
When to replace
Most batteries last 3 to 5 years. Slow cranking, dim lights, or a swollen case mean it is time.
